I have found one thing that will make my kids love just about any vegetable and that item is bacon.
My favorite Grilled Cabbage Recipe contains a liberal portion of bacon and it makes things tasty!
Ingredients
- 1 Large Green Cabbage (I have never tried a red cabbage – hmmm….I better try that sometime soon
- 1 lb bacon
- 1/2 small onion
- Salt and Pepper
- 1/2 stick butter or margarine
- Garlic salt
Directions
- Boil the green cabbage whole for ~20 minutes
- While the cabbage is boiling, chop the bacon into small pieces and cook on the stove. You will want to cook it at medium temperature because you don’t want the bacon to be crispy – you want it soft when it is done
- As the bacon is close to being finished, add chopped onion to the bacon pan and cook until tender
- When the cabbage is done, use tongs to take it out of the pan and let it cool for 10 mins so you can handle it without burning your fingers
- Cut out the core and stem
- Take the bacon/onion mix and put it in the hole created when you cut out the stem
- Wrap the cabbage, bacon and onion with tinfoil (2 layers) and smear the butter all over the outside of the cabbage. Mixing a little of the bacon grease will make it taste even better).
- Place the tinfoil wrapped package on the grill and cook it at medium heat for 20 minutes. This will give the bacon a chance to permeate the inside of the cabbage and the butter to coat the outside of the cabbage.
- Take the package off the grill, unwrap it (careful it will be hot), cut it into sections (making sure that each person gets a generous portion of bacon) and serve it hot with some salt and pepper
This is an excellent side dish and is perfect with the Sunday Roast Recipe
Let me know how your family likes it.
Enjoy!
